An inspiration behind this post is to provide an easy way to solve complex water jug problem.

Many peoples struggle to solve this kind of problems. This kind of questions can be asked during the interviews to test the logical thinking ability of the candidate.

But if you actually see logic behind it then its extremely simple plus minus mathematics.

Yes you heard it right if you know basic addition and subtraction then you will be able to solve all such kinds of problem.

Water Jug Problem 1: Measure 4 Liter water from 5 Liter and 3 Liter Water Jug.


Problem Statement: We have an 3 Liter and 5 Liter water jug and an unlimited source of tap water. We need to measure 4 Liter from this. How will you do that.

Solution:
 
Step 1: Fill 5 Liter Jug and empty into 3 Liter Jug.

Step 2: 5 Liter Jug will be left with 2 Liter Water. Then empty 3 Liter Jug and put 2 Liter water from 5 liter jug to 3 liter jug.

Step 3: Now 3 Liter jug is having 2 Liter water, having space for 1 more liter.

Step 4: Fill 5 Liter jug and put 1 litter into 3 Liter jug.

Step 5: Solved! Now 5 Liter jug is left with 4 Litter water.


Logic:

We have 2 water jug one with 3 Liter and 5 Liter and we need to measure 4 Liters.

If we fill 5 liter jug once and empty it into 3 liter then we will get 2 liter water. If we repeat this twice we will get 4 Liter water.

5 - 3 = 2

(5 * 2) - (3 * 2) = (2 * 2) = 4

That is fill 5 Liter jug 2 times and empty it into 3 liter jug you will get 4 liter water.



Water Jug Problem 2: Measure 1 Liter water from 8 Liter and 5 Liter Water Jug.


Problem Statement: We have to measure 1 Liter water from 5 liter water jug and 8 liter water jug.

Solution:

Step 1: Fill 8 liter jug and empty it into 5 liter jug.

Step 2: Empty 5 liter jug. Put remaining 3 liter water from 8 liter jug to 5 liter water jug.

Step 3: It will be left with 3 liter water and 2 liter empty space.

Step 4: Fill 8 liter water jug again and empty 2 liters into 5 liter jug. It will be left with 6 liter water.

Step 5: Empty the 5 liter jug. Put 5 liter water from 8 liter jug to 5 liter water jug.

Step 6: Solved! Now 8 liter water jug will be left with 1 liter water.

Logic:

(8 * 2) - (5 * 3)  = 1

Which means fill 8 liter water jug 2 times and empty it into 5 liter water jug. Then you will be able to measure 1 liter.


Conclusion:

It is very easy just we need to find multiplying factor and do an subtraction to see how can we get an expected number.

For example if we have 5 liter and 8 liter jug and we need to measure 1 liter.

(8 * X) - (5 * Y) = 1

Then X will be 2 and Y will be 3, hence we need to fill 8 liter water jug 2 times ans empty it in 5 liter water jug 3 times.
